In the 1990s the area of land under agri-environmental management grew steadily. From 2004 it expanded rapidly to a maximum in 2006, after which it declined. In the most recent management period (2016–2024) the area increased again, reaching approximately 117,000 hectares on 1 January 2024 (approximately 6% of all agricultural land).
