Waste generation and treatment, 1985-2018
More and more waste is being recovered or incinerated, while less and less is being sent to landfill sites. 61 million tons of waste was generated in 2018 (excluding contaminated soil, dredged spoils and animal manure).
Changes in amount of waste generated
In 2012 some changes were made to the monitoring of waste generation and treatment. Where possible, these changes were implemented from 2006, but some only took effect in 2007 or 2008.
The amount of waste generated increased up to 2008, decreasing again to less than 60 million tons in 2013 and stabilised on 61 million tons (excluding contaminated soil, dredged spoils and animal manure).
Changes in waste incineration, landfill and recovery
Waste recovery increased considerably in 2010. This is because several waste incineration plants were assigned as recovery plants. The amount of incinerated waste therefore also declined. The amount of waste sent to landfills has decreased steadily during 1990-2010. In recent years approximately 1.2 million tons waste per annum was landfilled.
