On 1 January 2014, there were 7.5 million houses in the Netherlands. This represents an increase of 7.1% compared with 1 January 2006. Since 2006 a slight increase was seen in privately-owned houses. On 1 January 2014 almost 56% of the houses were occupied by the owner and 43.5% were rented.

Slight increase of privately-owned houses

Of the 7.5 million homes in the Netherlands, 55.8% were occupied by the owner and 43.5% were rented. In the period 2006 - 2014 there was an increase in private ownership, from 53.7% in 2006 to 55.8% in 2014. In the same period the share of rented houses did not change (43.5%).
Most municipalities in the Netherlands have more privately-owned houses than rented houses. In 27 of the 403 municipalities there were more rented accommodations. The highest percentage of rented accommodations (72.4%) was seen in Amsterdam, the lowest percentage in Rozendaal in the province of Gelderland. In large cities there are usually relatively often rented houses.
