On 31 December 2014, there were nearly 7.6 million dwellings in the Netherlands. In addition, there were over 1.1 million non-residential buildings including office and shop premises and care establishments, with the major share of these buildings classified under 'Other use' and 'industry'. There is some variation in the regional concentration of these utilisation functions.

In 2014, over 45 thousand new dwellings were completed, 8.4% fewer than in 2013. In the same period, the number of newly constructed non-residential premises also declined, although less sharply than the number of dwellings.

South Holland has ten times more non-residential premises than Flevoland

The majority of both dwellings and non-residential premises are located in the province of South Holland with altogether nearly 1.9 million buildings. This is 21.4% of the total stock of premises in the Netherlands. South Holland has ten times as many premises as the relatively new province of Flevoland.
At the end of 2014, dwellings accounted for the vast majority of total stocks of premises with 87.1%. The percentages in each province do not vary significantly; the dwelling stock was relatively the largest in Flevoland (89.2%), followed closely by Utrecht and South Holland. Flevoland and Utrecht were also on top in 2012 and 2013.
Within these provinces centred on residential living, the percentages in the larger municipalities stand out, among them Almere (92.5%), Houten (92%) and Delft (91.7%). On a national level, the municipality of Millingen aan de Rijn in the province of Gelderland tops the list with dwellings taking up 95.4% of its premises. This municipality also featured the highest relative number of dwellings in previous years.

Fewer new constructions

In 2014, a total of 52.602 premises were completed (including both dwellings and non-residential buildings). This meant a volume decrease in new constructions by 8.3% on the previous year.
In line with this decrease, the number of newly constructed dwellings fell to slightly over 45 thousand completions in 2014. The year 2013 saw an increase instead (1.3%).
Among dwellings in particular, the other increases and decreases fluctuate strongly in numbers. The decrease in new constructions in 2014 was 'offset' somewhat by a drop in the number of demolished homes and other decreases, but on balance (increase minus decrease) there were nearly 30 thousand fewer additional dwellings in 2014 than in 2013.
Non-residential premises showed a slightly more positive development in 2014 than dwellings. The decrease in newly built non-residential premises was less pronounced than for dwellings with 7.6% compared to 2013. The number of demolished non-residential premises fell back more (-9.1%) than the decrease in new constructions.
In contrast with dwellings, the total number of non-residential premises in 2014 increased by over 3 thousand compared to 2013.
